Screening and Discussion at the Melbourne Law School
The Institute for International Law and the Humanities (IILAH) and the Centre for Resources Energy and Environmental Law (CREEL) will co-host a screening of 'The End of the Line' at the Melbourne Law School. Law academic Dr Margaret Young and Melbourne-based writer Ms Hilary McNevin will lead a general discussion after the screening of the film. Associate Professor Sundhya Pahuja will chair the event.
The film is about over-fishing of the world's oceans. The synopsis from the film's website at endoftheline.com <http://endoftheline.com/> states: "Imagine an ocean without fish. Imagine your meals without seafood. Imagine the global consequences. This is the future if we do not stop, think and act. The End Of The Line is the world's first major documentary about the devastating effect of overfishing and examines the imminent extinction of bluefin tuna, brought on by increasing western demand for sushi; the impact on marine life resulting in huge overpopulation of jellyfish; and the profound implications of a future world with no fish that would bring certain mass starvation."
Ms Hilary McNevin is the author of Guide to Fish: Choosing and Cooking Sustainable Species (John Fairfax Publications, 2008) and regularly publishes with Broadsheet.com.au and The Age. Her blog, www.foodwiththought.com.au, discusses issues of consumer agency and sustainability.
Dr Margaret Young is a Senior Lecturer, Melbourne Law School, and author of the forthcoming book Trading Fish, Saving Fish: The Interaction Between Regimes in International Law (Cambridge University Press).
